Extension, renovation and conversion of original helicopter hanger to a modern contemporary dwelling

Project: Extension to Grade 2 Listed Thatch Cottage

Location: Hartest, Suffolk

An interesting building with a charming story on a large plot.

Our clients purchased the property with the aim to convert and extend the existing building into a contemporary family home, with the clients work premises within the grounds of the 3.5 acre plot.

The land was originally owned by property next door and the previous owner of this property intended to be able to land a helicopter on the land, with the building serving as a hanger for the helicopter, built originally in the 1960’s. The hanger had a flat above able to accommodate an engineer for the helicopter. In the 1980’s the first floor was altered and extended to create a larger residence.

The client brief was to create a modern open plan family dwelling with 4 to 5 bedrooms and be able to accommodate potential future needs. The client also wanted to be able to utilize the great views to the North, East and West from both floors. The client also needed a workshop for hie work within the site, but separate from the dwelling.

The following scheme resulted in an extension that complimented and embraced the existing building, without dominating it. The large areas of modern glazing will allow the occupants to enjoy the Suffolk countryside in all 3 directions.  The scheme also has a detached single storey workshop to the north of the site with its own separate access.

The scheme is currently under construction, with the client carrying out a large part of the work himself to the highest standard, we can’t wait to see it finished.

The property has an interesting past, the work will result in a lovely family home whilst complimenting the original building within the countryside.
