Project: Design an extension, refurbishment, and building control regularisation for a historic farmhouse
Location: Colne Engaine, Colchester. Essex.
Optimum Architecture was commissioned to design an extension, refurbishment, and building control regularisation for a historic farmhouse.
As part of our design approach, we went beyond the original brief to suggest relocating the kitchen to the rear of the extension, allowing the space to take full advantage of the stunning views over the River Colne.
We utilised the existing modern foundations, saving money and to preserve the integrity of the existing historic foundations, we introduced a feature truss that not only provided structural support but also complemented the character of the exposed timber beams. By incorporating a vaulted ceiling and floor-to-ceiling glazing, we maximised natural light, creating a bright and inviting kitchen and dining space that seamlessly blends contemporary living with the home’s original charm.
