A super-insulated, self-sufficient, and sustainable home for the future

The brief for this project was to improve both the self-sufficiency and internal layout of an existing 1950s detached home. The goals included reducing energy consumption, integrating modern renewable technologies, and removing the original open-flue chimneys.

We began with a detailed measured survey of the property and worked closely with the client to design a scheme of alterations. A major aspect of this was the removal of two internal chimneys that previously ran through the middle of the first-floor bedrooms. Their removal transformed the upstairs layout, creating spacious, comfortable double bedrooms.

To reduce energy consumption, we focused on significantly increasing insulation, improving airtightness, and minimizing thermal bridging wherever practical. The removal of the chimneys not only enhanced the floor plan but also enabled a more continuous insulation layer, fewer cold bridges, and a stronger thermal envelope. Relocating the front door further contributed to these energy performance gains.

We installed integrated solar panels on the southeast-facing roof slopes of both the main dwelling and the garage, along with an electricity management system to optimize the use of generated solar power. An air source heat pump was also installed, providing efficient heating and hot water.

The client wished to retain the existing conservatory. To meet performance targets, we modified the junctions and connections between the conservatory and the main house to allow insulation continuity and reduce cold bridging.

Aesthetically, the home has been modernized with crisp, smooth render and new plain roof tiles, which complement the integrated solar panels. Original features like the tiled window cills were retained, preserving the character of the property.

The client was extremely pleased with the results. The internal environment is noticeably warmer and more comfortable, energy bills have significantly decreased, and the home is now well-positioned for the next 60+ years of use.
