Spacious Single-Storey Rear Extension to a Grade II Listed Building in Rural Suffolk.

This project involved removing an unattractive flat-roofed rear extension and replacing it with a spacious, light-filled single-storey living room offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

The brief was to add a new comfortable living room to the historic building. Following a thorough assessment, we identified the existing flat-roof extension as the area with the greatest potential for enhancement. By removing this incongruous addition and replacing it with a more sympathetic form, we were able to significantly improve both the aesthetics and functionality of the home.

The new extension is connected to the Listed Hall via a single storey link block with a traditionally detailed lead flat roof. Externally, the extension is finished with painted render, clay plain tiles, and a soft red brick plinth, materials chosen to harmonise with the original building.

Internally, the space is defined by generous glazing, a vaulted ceiling, and beautifully crafted principal oak trusses and purlins.

The result is a spacious and welcoming living room that sits comfortably alongside the Listed Hall, enhancing the overall character of the property by replacing the former unsightly extension.
